Peace & Quiet - NOT!

Chad decided a couple of weeks ago that he needed a guitar. His two buddies, Jared and Brad, both have guitars. So, they shopped and they shopped and this is the guitar Chad ended up buying. It's a Fender Showmaster FMT .. whatever that means. It is beautiful but he can't play it but that doesn't stop him from trying. His friends are teaching him and I told him I would pay for some lessons.

Having the guitar wasn't bad enough. Yesterday he bought an amplifier. Remember, we live in a house the size of a matchbox! He stays up all night and sleeps half the day. I go to bed at a reasonable hour and get up at 6 or 7 a.m. He wants to play the guitar while I'm sleeping .. in the next room with paper thin walls! Since he kept me awake half the night, I want to wake him up when I get up but then I think . . he might want to play the guitar if he's awake so I let him sleep.

I cant only imagine that if it were me, I'd be wanting to play it all the time too so I've been patient. Thank goodness for earplugs and noise cancelling headphones!

You know, Judy dear, that they make headphones that hook up to the amp and make it so only ds can hear his practice... Has he been holding out on you? No way could I sleep with earplugs and headphones. Time for him to get his own headphones! And for some reason, I think playing the guitar at 6am... nah, it just wouldn't be cool. Good luck and hope he's a quick study like his Mama! I love your leaf quilt and the idea behind it! I have seen a couple out there in blogland- way to go!

You are a good mother, I may not be so patient : )

Nice guitar. He will either keep up with it and then you will enjoy the music or he will quit. Be patient, we all find our way. I have a private concert every night when my husband plays his guitar. Dot

I can feel for you - my 14 year old got a new amp and guitar for his birthday at the beginning of September, and he is driving us nuts. However he is doing well and it is a change from the drums. And the thing with electric guitars is that they don't even have to be plugged in ( no fun of course). My son picks up any guitar around the house - we have quite a few as my husband is a guitarist too. It gets better, I hope.

Sounds like quite an adventure. I'm with Nines - HE needs the headphones!

When he's better at playing you will really enjoy it, but until then, I'm with the others, get him some headphones and ask that he use them while people are sleeping.

It's good that he's enjoying it so much.

Our DS has and entire COLLECTION of guitars. We started him on an acoustic when he first decided he wanted to play at about 12. It wasn't long before he saved his money and bought himself and electric and an amp. We had some good arguments at first. Luckily, he got pretty good about the hours and volume he played. He would love it when we left the house because he could crank up the amp. I'm just glad none of the neighbors ever complained.
I'm with Nines though. For 40 dollars we bought DS a Stack In a Box before he left for college, in case his roommate wasn't so excited about guitar playing. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Dean-Stack-in-a-Box-Guitar-Headphone-Amp?sku=240508

what a nice mom-- my rule from the time I bought an electric guitar as a xmas gift for my son was -- headphones plugged into the amp (and quiet enough not h=to have leakage from them so his ears were still undamaged) OR no guitar. He only uses the amp without headphones when I'm not home.... Love him dearly, but we share this house, which means I'm allowed to have needs too!

And in the blink of the eye this is a memory.

Isn't it good that he is learning an new skill?

Just keep repeating those things to yourself.........

I have a guitar playing son as well -- the first thing he got with his amp is the headphones. I love to hear him play in the evenings but that "Jimi Hendrix" practicing he does can be a bit much. He also has a computer program for mixing and recording - and headphones work with that as well.

My boy is a fanatial guitarist, but I never hear him. He always plays with his headphones plugged into the amp. He recently picked up a coveted new Ibanez thathad taken weeks for him to acquire. I made him cut loose and make some NOISE with it. Ir's not normal to be so quiet....

It's great when they learn the ropes and actually make good music.

you are a great mom to put up with that!! i think nines' idea for the headphones might be worth digging into your pocket for. At that age, he certainly could be into other things not so good!! and who knows he could be the next bruce springsteen!!

Hi, Judy: I am a member of Stashbuster and clicked on your link to your blog. My son had an acoustic guitar, but his friend brings over his electric one with amp and leaves it, so my son ends up playing the electric guitar too. And for icing on the cake, my son has a drum set too! Fortunately, my sewing room is two floors up from his basement studio, so his "music" isn't too bad.
