My Town

Owensboro is such a funny little town. Today I took a different path to Hobby Lobby. NO! I didn't buy fabric. Chad needed something from there. I usually travel on the bypass but today we went the back way. From the bypass, I had noticed that Crazy Larry had painted his building purple but from the front . . OMG! I never knew he had such good taste. It's purple and lime green! Personally, I don't think Larry is crazy. I'm not even sure if Larry is this guy's name but we have bought mattresses from him before and he's pretty knowledgeable about bedding, carries name brands and is nice to deal with. And with the building being purple and lime green, it's my newest favorite place in Owensboro!

Don't ask me what this billboard's about because I don't have a clue . . nor do I want to know. Small town politics I suppose. Without getting political, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why the government (your taxes and mine!) subsidizes this small town airport with one or two flights daily from one carrier, with every flight going to St. Louis, when we can drive to Evansville (45 minutes away) and have several airlines with many more flight options. On a good day, the one or two flights out of Owensboro make it but getting back to Owensboro just has never worked for us. Hey . . maybe there's a subliminal message there . . leave and don't come back!

I had to laugh about the airport thing. My tiny town has one too, but mostly used for the military. Once I looked into flying there and it would have been double the cost. So instead we just drive 1.5 hours to Tucson or even 3 hours to Phoenix to get decent flights. :)

We love our small town airport. It's true the flights are limited and not often direct but if you keep an eye on prices good deals can be had. It's only 5 minutes from our house and doesn't cost anything to park there. Also because of it's size arrival 2 hours+ prior to your flight is unnecessary. The large metropolitan airport is 35 minutes if you are lucky enough to have no traffic and parking can't be found for lower than $9 per day.

we have a "local" airport in hartford (actually it's near the Mass. border) which I love. keeps us from having to fly out of NYC!! a nightmare!

just catching up on your blog and LOVE your x and o quilt. i have printed out the directions for tonya's quilt and love your design. i also see that you may be doing a 1 hour quilt every month.. that would be fabulous.. don't know how you find the time but would love to do the x and o or a variation of it...

thanks for the inspiration...

Your post is a reminder of why we should always carry our digital cameras with us. You just never know what you are going to find. Thanks for sharing parts of your small town.

Our local airport started out the way yours is right now. Be careful what you wish for-they're now building a new exit on the interstate to handle all the airport traffic!
The village I live in is so small(3300)that we don't even have a real traffic light, just a flashing one. But I'm less than 2 hours from NYC, so when I need my city fix, I can take care of it.

Libby said exactly what I was thinking. (I wonder if she's a neighbor?) The small airport nearby does have flights to two different cities, but it's wonderfully convenient. Of course, Evansville traffic probably is not the factor that southern California traffic is!
