Try as I might, I can't convince myself that August is history. I agreed to buy no fabric in August. Today is August 27. August is almost over, right? But, almost doesn't count and . . I bought fabric! Let me defend myself before you pass judgment on me.
First, I'm doing Tonya's X's and O's.
I'm having so much fun! While sewing, I begin to think about backing. I could use muslin but I'm sure I don't have enough of anything that is red/ecru to use. Then, I found this online. Perfect for the backing! It's kinda "valentiney" but it says what I want it to say since this quilt will be for Vince. Perfect backing but wait . . it gets better! It's Moda and I found it on sale for $5/yard.
Yes, I could've waited 4 more days and ordered it on September 1 but it might have been gone. They may not even have the whole 6 yards that I need for the backing anyway, but if they do, I bought fabric in August. Six yards of Moda for $30 with a definite purpose .. you can't fault me for that, right?

No fault, no foul. It was a *need* so you're good!
I can't believe how quickly you work! Your Xs and Os look great!
If it was for a specific purpose, AND it was under $40 AND on sale, I think you're absolved!
The fabric looks perfect to the project.
I am sure nobody will come after you for buying - it was a bargain too :-)
You got a great deal for fabric you needed. That's OK by me.
You were sooo close... But you're right, sales change at the beginning of the month, and the fabric could be gone...Darling print.
Melanie
I'da probably bought it too. :-) It was perfect and on sale. What more could you ask for. AND it probably won't arrive until September......
Ain't we a bunch of enablers? LOL!
it has an intended use--and didn't you all have some rather loose rules for this? quilt shows, vacations etc.
Gee, I don't hear the quilt police sirens so I guess you're safe. lol
I can't believe how fast you work-you're one of those "I just whipped this up" kind of quilters. No wonder you can accomplish a lot in an hour a day!
If some months can have extra days to finish certain goals, surely some months can have fewer days to allow for "necessities" :-)
When price and purpose are perfect, buying is not only acceptable, it is required! Chapter 2 section 3 of the Quilt Police Handbook, under exemptions for stashbusters, special situations.
August? No, that's long over. This is -5 September. And wow, I really can't believe how fast you are. Hope you're having some fun with this.
works for me!
Seems as though you "needed" it. And we all know that sale fabric doesn't last and is limited in quantity at best. A wise decsision for which no one can fault you.
You're right...the perfect fabric!
It was needed to finish a project (AND on sale)! It was A-okay!
Official ruling here ..... :)
I love that backing fabric! I really would like to get some. Where did you find it?
There's no way you could have passed up that fabric. Smart to jump on it.
Some things are too good to risk missing out on. And it's not fabric to add to your stash.
It's lovely fabric, and since you'll be using it straight away it doesn't count.
You work fast! Love the x's and O's and the fabric you ordered. GOing to look good together
Your fabric purchase is the exception that proves the rule. It would have been foolish to take the chance and wait. Absolutely the right thing to do.
Are you doing another purchase free month? Will you challenge us again with a stash quilt?
I had such great fun working on that and I am looking around my studio with new eyes. I see more quilts lurking....
Sorry you didn't make it all the way through but I really like this quilt - very cute with the X & O's.
I also like the 1 hour quilts everyone's doing. I didn't play along because of a) a lack of time right now and b) my challenge for August was to not start any new projects. I've got your directions printed out and plan on making a small version hopefully sooner rather than later. I was surprised at how quickly everyone got their tops done and it was fun to see the different fabric choices.
Well, let's put it this way - if you didn't buy it - and then couldn't get it anymore - your GREAT quilt would probably turn into a UFO while you went looking for a perfect backing, and you know - once you have your mind set on one thing, it is hard to find another "perfect" thing. So, your August purchase saved this top from a destiny of the "back of the closet until someday..."!
Cheers!
Evelyn
